Dirty Martini

There are few celebrities I loathe more than Gwyneth Paltrow. Yet, annoyingly, the recipes she features in her newsletter always appeal to me. If she published a cookbook, I would probably buy it.

This week's newsletter included a recipe for a Dirty Martini that I would really like to try...Damn her!:

For Two Cocktails:

  • lots of ice
  • 6 ounces of your favorite vodka
  • 1 cap’s worth of extra dry vermouth (I like Martini & Rossi)
  • 1 tablespoon of cocktail olive brine
  • 6 high quality cocktail olives (preferably stuffed with pimentos)

Fill your shaker with ice and add the vodka, vermouth and olive brine. Close it tightly and shake it for ages until it’s all snowy on the outside. Place 3 olives into the bottom of a martini glass, strain over half of your icy cold mixture and repeat with the remaining olives and mixture in another glass. Give one to a lucky friend.

  1. Have you ever had a dirty martini? This recipe, like so many of hers, seems really basic. Dirty is the only way I like martinis, at least when they're made with gin.

  2. I've had them once or twice, but I was never sure about the proportions. But you're right--it's not like Gwynnie invented the dirty martini. Or bread + olive oil. Most of her recipes ARE totally basic.

Why do you prefer gin to vodka? I don't think I've ever had the vodka kind.

  3. I don't know if I prefer gin. I think I usually drink gin martinis just because that's the traditional martini. But I meant if it's a gin martini I only like it dirty because the olive juice helps with the gin taste. Vodka is almost tasteless, so I don't really need the olive juice.

    how twee! how very gwyneth.

i am a serious connoisseur of the gin martini, but i did tread outside le zone de confort to sample a sale parisian at the bastille cafe in ballard. a cocktail "for dirty martini lovers: vodka & cornichon," it was amusingly cornichon-y for the first sip or two, but disgustingly cornichon-y for the duration. mech.

i guess i just don't like cornichons that much. perhaps if it had been made with gin, the drink would have had more character.

i'm not sure i can think about this any longer...

  5. "disgustingly cornichon-y" :D :D Hahaha!

I bought some vodka yesterday so that I can try the vodka martini. Guy sneers at vodka, so we didn't have any in the house.

  6. Congrats to Beebo for successfully making her own martooni!
p.s. My rule of thumb with shaking time is: shake 'til the cold of the shaker makes your hand hurt. I'm tough!
